According to a new yorker magazine article by Evan Osnos, there has emerged  in China a "self-styled vanguard in defense of China’s honor, a patriotic swath of society that the Chinese call the fen qing, the angry youth..."

For this, Mr Osnos, I must say no.

Fen Qing, or the angry youth, are not at all about the SBs(this term, weirdly, makes sense in both languages and cultures) who mobbed Carrefour after the china torch relay mishap in Paris in the name of patroitism, or massively badmouthed a fading hollywood star who just casually voiced her opinion after China earthquake(again,in the name of patroitism), or did or are doing all sorts of stupid things that only play into the hands of the ill-functioning government who knows how to manipulate all too well...

The term FEN QING, the real little angry men, in all intents and purposes, refers to those young people who cared about their nation, not for the nation's, or patriotism's sake, but rather, for their deep and genuine concern over the future of the country,  and of the Chinese race as a whole. They will never be exploited by the devious government, for they always know what they are fighting for- the true, the right and always the better. They will never settle for less for any reason , they will never cease until the better is earned, and assured... They will never be fooled, or misguided by any sugar-coated advocacy of patriotism or high-spirit of nationalism, or pre-packaged misleading message of COME ON,LOVE THE GOVERNMENT,CUZ IT'S LOVING OUR GREAT CHINA.... They are more than ever, more than any body cystal clear about the absurdity of confusing LOVING A COUNTRY with LOVING THE RULING GOVERNMENT. They are two different things, the truth of which may never be lost on any westerners, but here in China all too often they are treated as the same thing. Sad, weird... but mostly sad. Fen Qing, they are, or should be, shall we say, the democratic vanguards, both in spirit and action, of China's new era, people who always decry the wrongdoings, or incompetencies of the ruling government, people who ceaselessly push for a more democratically-oriented political framework in the nation that ensures more civilian rights and political saying and sway, people who never spare their wrath when it comes to suppression and crackdown and any and all acts that tramp on human rights, people who proud themselves upon following closely in the footsteps of those democratic forerunners who shed blood at Tian-ANMEN square back in late 1980s, who stood up for their ideals and pleas and bravely died...for a better China...

Fen Qing, could as well mean 粪青, liberally translated, trashy young guys. I may be a little irrational and "generalizational" here, But those who think marching on the street and mobbing some supermarket and calling some loose-tongue star "bitch"  or something in that calibre equals patroitism could all be labeled "粪青". They couldn't hold candles for our June 4th heroes, for they never know what they are doing, and they could be turned into dangerous instruments to be used against themselves... I feel rather ANGRY here, but again, mostly, Sad...

On a positive note, Fen Qing could also mean "奋擎", liberally translated, "to struggle to uphold". I think it's a fairly apt term for the real Fen Qing. For they always are struggling to uphold a undying torch of fighting for a BETTER, FREER AND genuinely STRONGER China.

Which Fen Qing are you gonna be, my fellow citizens?
