不才前日惊闻美国文学巨匠级人物厄普代克(John Updike)先生仙逝,惋惜之情难抑而草七绝一首,以悼厄公:



厄公西游慢慢行

一代师开一代风,

小镇人物竞枯荣;

了忆妙笔纵横日,

珠玑字字尽厄翁。

A "once-in-a-generation phenomenon" spearheading a whole new era of American literature, he wrote marvelous small-town characters that vied for everlasting relevance;

While re-reading his works, one can't help but think back to the days when a rather active Updike in his inimitable way wielded his mighty pen and created a seemingly endless chain of smart fictions,

and alas, find himself awed by the words and stories that are so brilliantly "Updikean".
